The short version
Your in-app updates show up on your notifications page, which you open from the bell or your sidebar. Your email and inbox preferences live together under Settings in each portal, with one switch per update. Job seekers and employers both get per-event switches now. Flip one off and it stops the email and the inbox item for that update. The only things you can't switch off are account and security messages (password resets, email-change confirmations), which always send.
Your in-app inbox
Both portals use the same notification inbox.
- Job seekers: your notifications
- Employers: your notifications
Your inbox gathers application updates, mentor activity (for job seekers), and role and candidate activity (for employers). Each notification shows what happened and when. Click one to jump to whatever it's about, like a job, a candidate, or a setting. Ones you've read look different from the ones you haven't.
One switch, both channels
This is the part worth understanding: each update has a single switch that covers the email and the in-app inbox item together. The settings page says it plainly: "Each toggle covers email and your in-app inbox, so muting it stops both. Changes save automatically. Account and security messages always send."
So there's no separate "email off, inbox on" setting. If you mute "New matching roles," you stop both the email and the inbox item for it. Changes save the moment you flip a switch, with no separate save button.
Email and inbox preferences for job seekers
Open Notification settings. Every update has its own switch, grouped by what it's about:
- Applications. Application confirmations, application status updates, and application decisions (when an employer decides not to move forward).
- Job alerts. New roles that match the pathways and searches you follow.
- Invitations. When an employer invites you to apply to one of their open roles.
- Referrals. When someone refers you to a role they think fits you.
- Mentoring. New mentoring requests (if you mentor), and responses to requests you've sent.
- Account. Occasional reminders to finish your profile so employers can find you.
- Support. Updates on any help request you've opened: a receipt, replies, and when it's resolved.
Everything is on by default. Switch off anything you'd rather not hear about.
Email and inbox preferences for employers
Open Notification settings. Same idea, grouped for your side:
- Applications. When a candidate applies to one of your published roles.
- Roles. Your first role going live, any role going live, a role closing soon (reminders 7, 3, and 1 days out), a role auto-closing when its date passes, and a role paused by a plan change.
- Billing. A section that's coming. There are no billing switches yet, so you'll see the group before it has anything in it.
- Support. Updates on any help request you've opened: a receipt, replies, and when it's resolved.
Everything is on by default, and flipping a switch saves right away.
What you'll get notified about
Here's the current set across both portals. "Update" means one switch covering the email and the inbox item.
| Update | Audience | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Password reset, email-change confirmation | Both | Always on (can't switch off) |
| Application confirmations | Job seeker | On, switchable |
| Application status updates | Job seeker | On, switchable |
| Application decisions | Job seeker | On, switchable |
| New matching roles | Job seeker | On, switchable |
| Invitations to apply | Job seeker | On, switchable |
| Referrals from people you know | Job seeker | On, switchable |
| Mentoring requests and responses | Job seeker | On, switchable |
| New application received | Employer | On, switchable |
| A role goes live, closing soon, auto-closed | Employer | On, switchable |
| Support receipt, replies, resolved | Both | On, switchable |
| Platform updates (marketing) | Both | Unsubscribe via the email footer |
Platform updates (occasional emails about new features and climate-hiring trends) aren't in the settings switches. To stop those, use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any of them.
The bell icon
Look for the bell in your portal's top bar. The badge shows how many unread notifications you have. Click it to open your inbox: job seekers or employers.
Step by step: turning something off
Turn off a specific update (either portal)
- Open Notification settings (job seekers or employers).
- Find the group it belongs to (Applications, Roles, Job alerts, and so on).
- Switch off the update you don't want. It saves automatically, and it stops both the email and the inbox item.
Turn off marketing emails
- Find the most recent Platform updates email in your inbox.
- Scroll to the footer.
- Click Unsubscribe. You're off the marketing list, and everything else still comes through.
Good to know
- One switch, both channels. Muting an update stops the email and the inbox item together. There's no separate email-only or inbox-only control.
- Account and security always send. Password resets and email-change confirmations can't be switched off, so you never lock yourself out by muting the wrong thing.
- On by default. Every switchable update starts on. You opt out of what you don't want, rather than opting in.
- Preferences are yours alone. Every employer teammate has their own, so switching something off in your settings doesn't touch anyone else's.
- Your preferences follow you. Sign in from a phone or a laptop, and they hold.
- Some groups are still growing. If a switch you'd expect isn't there yet (the employer Billing group, for example), that update isn't set up yet either.
Trouble?
- No emails at all. See Email not arriving for the usual checks (spam folder, sender allowlist, and giving it a little time).
- Too many emails. Switch off the updates you don't want in Notification settings, and use the unsubscribe link for marketing emails.
- A switch you expected is missing. We're still adding some updates. If a switch isn't there yet, that update isn't set up yet either.
