Referrals and badges

Send a friend a warm intro to a climate role, and earn badges as your referrals sign up and get hired. It's a kind thing to do, and your profile keeps score.

The short version

Found a role a friend would be great for? Open the job and hit Refer a friend to send them a personal note and a link to apply. You can track everyone you've referred from the Referrals button on your profile, and you earn three badges along the way: one for your first referral, one when someone you referred joins, and one when someone you referred gets hired.

Referring someone to a role

  1. Open the role. From any published job in the listings, find Refer a friend (a button on the job on desktop, an icon in the bottom bar on mobile).
  2. Add their details. A window opens, titled "Refer someone to this role," with the note "They'll get a note from you and a link to apply." Enter their email, and optionally add a personal note on why you think they'd be a great fit.
  3. Send it. Click Send referral. They get your intro and a link straight to that role's application.

If you'd rather share the link yourself (by text or your own message), use Copy link instead, which copies the apply link for you to paste anywhere.

Your friend always stays in control: as the window says, "They'll see that you referred them. They choose whether to apply."

What happens for the person you refer

  • Already on Green Jobs Board? They get a friendly notification and email that you referred them, with a link to the role.
  • New to us? They get an invite to sign up, and when they do, the role you referred them to is saved to their Your Jobs automatically, so it's waiting for them.

Either way, whether they apply is up to them.

Tracking your referrals

Open the Referrals button on your profile to see:

  • People you've referred to climate roles, each with the role and how far they've gotten: invited, signed up, applied, or hired.
  • Referred to you, the roles other people have sent your way.

Haven't referred anyone yet? You'll see a nudge: "Know someone who'd be great for a climate role? Open any job and hit Refer a friend to send them a warm intro."

The three badges

Your referrals earn badges, shown in the Badges card on your profile. They're little postage-stamp illustrations that fill in with color as you earn them:

Badge You earn it when
Seed You send your first referral.
Sprout Someone you referred signs up for Green Jobs Board.
Bloom Someone you referred gets hired.

Until you've earned one, it sits faded with a hint of how to unlock it. Once earned, it shows the date you got it. They're a small, honest thank-you for helping people find climate work, not a points scheme, so there's nothing to redeem, just a record of the good you've done.

Good to know

  • Referrals are role-specific. You refer someone to a particular role, not to the platform in general, so the intro and the apply link both point at that job.
  • Sharing the raw link isn't tracked. Using Copy link to send the apply page yourself is totally fine, but since no referral is recorded, it won't move your badges. Use Send referral if you want the credit.
  • Invites don't wait forever. A referral invite link is good for about 30 days. If your friend signs up much later, they can still join, but it may not count toward your "Sprout" badge.
  • You can't refer yourself. And you can only refer someone to a role that's currently published.
  • Referring twice is harmless. Sending the same person to the same role again just refreshes your note, it doesn't spam them.
  • You control referral emails to you. "Referrals from people you know" is one of the switches in your notification settings.
