Job Description

Marketing Specialist/Contractor

About Better Food Foundation

The Better Food Foundation is a non-profit organization powering a global movement for plant-forward, climate-smart food systems. We use behavioral science strategies to develop and scale climate solutions.  We focus on transforming food service settings in university dining halls, coffee shops, restaurants, workplaces, events, and other out-of-home locations that shape our cultural food norms.

We work across a few core areas:

  1. Transforming Food in Higher Education: We train student interns through our DefaultVeg Campus program, and collaborate with university foodservice and sustainability professionals to advocate for plant-forward dining on university campuses.
  2. Professional Training & Education: We offer webinars and live events that provide training in behavioral science and advocacy. Our goal is to empower participants to advocate for climate-smart, plant-forward food systems.
  3. NGO Partner Network: We strengthen the broader ecosystem of advocates working to transform our food system (plant-rich diet change) through capacity-building, strategic organizing, and movement-building.

The Role

We are seeking a Marketing Specialist to implement and manage digital marketing campaigns under the guidance of our VP of Programs and Strategy. This position requires a commitment to our mission, vision, and values that drive our work. You will help transform the impact of our strategies into engaging campaigns, content, and outreach efforts that enhance our visibility, reach, and contributions.

With our signature strategy of plant-based defaults and nudges now established at hundreds of campuses and institutions and adopted by numerous NGOs, we are building a marketing engine to align with that momentum and accelerate the movement for plant-based food systems. The individual chosen for this role will help shape how a rapidly growing food-systems movement shares its story. This is an ongoing contract role with a monthly retainer, offering opportunities for growth as the organization expands.

You will work closely with our team across programs and operations to highlight stories, refine messaging, and extend our mission to new audiences.

What You’ll Do

  • Implement BFF’s comprehensive marketing strategies and campaigns
  • Create compelling content across digital channels — social media, website, email newsletters, and press releases—including written, visual, and video content.
  • Help manage our social media platforms and data reporting
  • Help us craft newsletters and fundraising outreach by optimizing our email list, segment testing, and automations.
  • Collaborate with program staff to gather stories, testimonials, and data that illustrate the impact of our work
  • Coordinate the production of digital marketing materials, including brochures, flyers, videos, and other promotional assets
  • Measure and report campaign, program, and newsletter effectiveness against goals and deliverables
  • Ensure that all public content, including content featuring data and research, is accurate, credible, and aligned with BFF’s language and style guidelines.

Who You Are

You might be a good fit for this role if you:

  • Are an experienced marketing specialist with a strong track record of implementing and managing successful marketing strategies at a non-profit environmental or food system organization (5+ years)
  • Are an excellent writer and communicator who can manage several projects from start to completion
  • Are proficient with digital marketing and AI tools, including social media management, email marketing, and analytics platforms
  • Are a collaborative co-worker who can work effectively with multiple team members
  • Are interested in and practice plant-forward food and climate-smart diets
  • Can work independently as a contractor, manage your own schedule, and deliver against defined goals
  • Experience with tools such as Canva, WordPress, and Circle.so, Claude, Notion, and other digital management tools
  • Bonus: Research, CRM, project management, and AI automation experience.

Logistics

  • Ongoing contract on a weekly/monthly retainer, starting at 20 hours/week (With availability Monday – Thursday for Zoom meetings in PST time zone)
  • Fully remote
  • Compensation: Competitive monthly retainer commensurate with experience and location
  • Reports to: VP Strategy & Programs
