(Hybrid)

Reports to: Hampton Roads Field Manager, Deputy Director of Advocacy and Campaigns  
Compensation: $15 per hour

Overview
The Virginia League of Conservation Voters (VALCV) is a growing, non-profit 501(c)(4) organization that advocates for progressive environmental policies, educates, and endorses candidates for public office, and holds elected officials accountable for issues including our air, land, water, and public health. The VALCV family of organizations also includes the VALCV Education Fund, a 501(c)(3) organization, and VALCV PAC, our political arm that directly helps elect pro-conservation candidates.

VALCV is looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic summer intern to support our field organizing efforts in the Hampton Roads Region. This is an 8-week paid internship beginning in June 2025 and running through August., with a commitment of 15 hours per week. The position is hybrid (combining in-person and virtual work) and is ideal for candidates based in the Hampton Roads area who have reliable transportation.

Reporting to the Hampton Roads Field Manager, the Community Advocacy Intern will support regional conservation, climate, and democracy initiatives by assisting with advocacy campaigns, community outreach, and event coordination. The intern will work closely with the Field Manager and Program Team to engage community members, mobilize advocates, and support public education and campaign efforts. This role offers hands-on training in field strategies and grassroots organizing, along with valuable exposure to the state-level political process and the role of environmental advocacy in driving policy change.


Intern Job Responsibilities:
  • Participate in weekly check-ins and strategy sessions with the Field Manager and Program Team to coordinate outreach activities and share community feedback
  • Assist in planning and executing events, meetings and outreach for relevant campaigns 
  • Use digital tools and relational organizing tactics to recruit volunteers to attend events and share their stories
  • Attend community events and meetings to assist in cultivating relationships with advocates, partner organizations and community leaders
  • Attend all necessary internal meetings during work hours, including but not limited to in-person all staff meetings
  • Engage community members and stakeholders to take any relevant campaign actions
  • Distribute 2025 Virginia Legislative Scorecard
  • Complete other tasks as assigned

Required Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Currently pursuing a degree in higher education
  • Applicants should be highly motivated and organized with a passion for environmental issues, environmental justice, climate action and conservation
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills 
  • Time management and critical thinking skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong intercultural communication skills and commitment to anti-racism
  • Ability to work independently on multiple assignments with varying deadlines
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment 
  • Ability to bring professionalism and adaptability to our dynamic work environment
  • Must have a dependable method of transportation; based in VA Beach region is preferred
  • Comfortable with email and phone outreach
  • Proficiency with Google Suite and Zoom

Preferred:
  • Academic coursework, volunteer work, internships, or community involvement in environmental advocacy, political organizing, or other public interest initiatives

Schedule: 
  • Starts upon hire in June 2025, ends after 8 weeks
  • 18 hours per week
  • Normal working hours are Monday through Thursday 10:30am - 3:00pm; with occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
