Margaret Nyamumbo
Founder & CEO, Kahawa 1893
Margaret Nyamumbo is the founder and CEO of Kahawa 1893, the first nationally distributed Black- and woman-owned coffee company in the U.S. Raised on her grandfather’s coffee farm in Kenya, Margaret saw firsthand both the essential role women play in coffee production and the inequities they face. After graduating from Smith College and Harvard Business School, she founded Kahawa 1893 to change the industry by empowering women farmers. Kahawa 1893 sources specialty-grade beans from women-led farming cooperatives across East Africa. Grown at high altitudes, the coffee develops greater density and natural sweetness, resulting in a smoother, richer cup with exceptional quality and less bitterness. Each bag also features a QR code that allows customers to tip farmers directly, with Kahawa matching the tips. Kahawa 1893 has been featured on Shark Tank and The Today Show and is sold at major retailers including Trader Joe’s and Sprouts.
