Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 2012, was the first grassroots climate activist group to form in Southern Oregon. The SOCAN mission is to promote awareness and understanding about the science, causes, and consequences of climate change. We work with individuals and organizations in Southern Oregon, statewide, nationally, and internationally to advocate for both personal and governmental actions that reduce the emissions and atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases. Position Summary
The Executive Director (ED) provides organizational leadership, operational management, and public representation for Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN). The ED ensures continuity of programs, supports volunteers and board members, maintains fiscal and administrative systems, and advances SOCAN’s mission to address the climate crisis through education, advocacy, and community engagement. The role serves as the central coordinating point for communications, program support, and organizational operations.
Key Responsibilities
Board Relations and Reporting
- Prepare and deliver the monthly Executive Director Report to the Board, with additional updates as needed
- Attend all board meetings
Organizational Leadership and Operations
- Organize, manage, and facilitate SOCAN’s monthly meetings and periodic activities
- Serve as the primary contact for all inquiries
- Document community outreach engagements
- Support regional activities and partnerships
Fiscal Management and Fundraising
- Oversee SOCAN’s fiscal activities, including budget preparation, income and expense tracking, and required documentation
- Prepare financial reports and collaborate with SOCAN’s bookkeeper to ensure accuracy and compliance
- Manage all fundraising activities
Public Representation and Community Engagement
- Serve as the public face of SOCAN
- Represent SOCAN at community meetings (e.g., businesses, climate organizations, etc.)
- Build and maintain relationships with partners, donors, and community stakeholders
Program Support and Coordination
- Support program leads in delivering SOCAN’s initiatives
Minimum Qualifications
- Nonprofit management experience with staff and volunteer leadership
- Financial management capability, including budgeting and reporting
- Experience with grant writing, donor relations and overall fundraising
- Familiarity with climate concepts and demonstrated passion for climate action
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Collaborative leadership and ability to foster inclusive, positive team environments
- Energetic and enthusiastic approach to motivating others, especially new volunteers
- Ability to provide constructive feedback with fairness and sensitivity
- Friendly, positive demeanor and sense of humor
- Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice
- Ability to manage or quickly learn SOCAN’s software programs
- Availability for occasional evening and weekend meetings or events
- Residency in or commitment to relocate to the Rogue Valley, Oregon.

- Experience leading an environmental or climate-focused nonprofit

Compensation & Benefits
Competitive salary dependent on experience; $65,000 – 75,000, full-time. Benefits include flexible schedule and work environment, and medical care stipend.
