Job Description

Note: We do not use automated systems to review resumes. Every application is personally reviewed by a member of our hiring team.

Billion Oyster Project’s Environmental Educator is an energetic seasonal employee who genuinely enjoys working with students and teachers. The Environmental Educator will be part of a small team of educators who will be the outward face of Billion Oyster Project for teacher and student groups, much of which will take place on our Floating Classroom. The Floating Classroom is an NYC Ferry that will provide school group programs for students and their teachers to immerse themselves in the work of Billion Oyster Project.

The Environmental Educator will work with the Direct Student Services team to both prepare for and execute school programs primarily aboard our NYC Ferry Floating Classroom.  Floating Classroom programs will service up to 100 students at a time and will require the Environmental Educator to teach a small group of 10-15 students in an activity station, while other activities are happening simultaneously on the ferry.  These programs focus on NYC school teachers and students from all five boroughs, with priority for K-12 aged Title I public schools. The Environmental Educator will also occasionally assist with land-based school group programs and potentially professional learning events for teachers. This is a highly interactive role that requires strong communication skills, adaptability, and comfort in being outdoors for long periods of time. The Environmental Educator position is a teaching-intensive, deliverables-based role and requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

The ideal candidate is a team player who is reliable, engaged, flexible, and embraces working with adults and students of all ages. The Environmental Educator will collaborate not only with educators and students but also, at times, with different internal teams within BOP and community groups to build towards the mission of Billion Oyster Project - to restore oysters to New York Harbor through public education initiatives. This mission includes restoring 1 billion oysters to New York Harbor by 2030 through the education and engagement of 1 million people.

The Environmental Educator reports to the Direct Student Services Program Manager.

  • Support in leading other outdoor and in-class programming for student/teacher groups
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining any gear or materials relevant to programming
  • Participate in prep work, debriefs and required tracking and follow-up for the above programs

The Environmental Educator’s responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Support the reporting of students engaged to maintain data for metric tracking and evaluation of programs
  • Support inventory, procurement, and deliveries for the Education Department
  • Assist with the monitoring and maintenance of our Oyster Research Stations
  • Support additional Education and Restoration events in the field as needed

  • 1+ years of proven successful teaching experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in education, environmental science, biology, policy or a related field
  • Ability to start Tuesday August 18, with term ending on December 18, 2026

Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledgeable about New York Harbor
  • Excellent writing, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Adaptability in modifying courses of action as needed
  • Ability to work in all types of weather
  • Comfortable in traveling independently across all 5 boroughs

Who we are and the work we do
About
The Billion Oyster Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to restore oyster reefs to New York Harbor through public education initiatives. The Billion Oyster Project is fueled by the passion and commitment of the team. Enthusiasm for the work of environmental restoration, public education and environmental justice is an expectation for the position. Candidates should be comfortable working on a team with various stakeholders and delivering on complex, multi-step projects.

Our Vision
A future in which New York Harbor is the center of a rich, diverse, and abundant estuary. The communities that surround this complex ecosystem have helped construct it, and in return, benefit from it, with endless opportunities for work, education, and recreation. The harbor is a world-class public space, well used and well cared for—our Commons.

Our Ethos
Restoration through Education
We believe that restoration without education is fleeting. To ensure the long-term health and productivity of our natural environment, we must teach young people to care for, monitor and restore their Harbor.

Education through Restoration
We believe that students learn best when applying their studies to a large-scale ecosystem restoration
project that challenges them to become active participants and takes them out of the classroom, down to the water’s edge to experience the ecosystem first-hand.

Our Flagship School
The Urban Assembly New York Harbor School’s mission is to provide a college-preparatory education built upon New York City's maritime experience that instills in students the ethics of environmental stewardship and the skills associated with careers on the water.
