Job Description

Job Summary:
Identifies, advocates for, and advises on energy efficiency improvements in new construction and existing industrial, commercial, and multi-family buildings and facilities. Participates in the development and delivery of cost-effective, market-based energy efficiency solutions to clients while contributing to a mission-driven, creative, enjoyable, and stimulating Certified Great Place to Work environment.
This position is focused on reducing electricity demand and energy consumption for American Municipal Power communities and serves a customer base in Delaware with travel to customer sites.

Location:
This is a remote position, and the ideal candidate will be located in Delaware. The work location is a hybrid between the employee’s home office and customer sites (there is no corporate office location in Delaware).

Essential Functions:

  • Performs and presents insightful, strategically targeted custom energy and financial analysis for customers.
  • Builds and maintains strategic relationships with customer decision-makers and implementation staff to develop project energy savings goals in a manner that leads to consistent repeat business. Utilizes investigative questioning to successfully determine how best to proceed with a variety of customers.
  • Works with a wide range of customers and partners, including business owners, architects, engineers, vendors, and trade allies, to promote the installation of cost-effective efficiency improvements in customers’ future and existing buildings/facilities, and to creatively overcome barriers to installation.
  • Plays an active role in identifying innovative technical solutions for electrical energy savings leveraging knowledge in new technical products, process improvements, and technological opportunities and occasionally presents to staff about these. Informs methods to analyze savings for new types of energy efficiency opportunities.
  • Manages customer expectations, persuades customers to make investments in energy efficiency, and contributes to customer engagement strategy. 
  • Works with customers to identify and prioritize site-specific project needs and opportunities, develop customer relationships, manage customer expectations, and inspect installed efficiency measures. Consistently collaborates with long-term customers to incorporate opportunities into customer’s planning process.
  • Leads teams to meet client deliverables while supporting and collaborating with other organizational staff to deliver services. For example: researching new products and technologies, identifying and implementing improvements to our processes and procedures, presenting at industry conferences, and assisting with development of training for clients and internal staff.
  • Maintains accurate and timely project records and documentation within VEIC’s database system.
  • Provides exemplary customer service both internally and externally to the organization.
  • Provides guidance to less experienced Engineering staff, generally on a one-to-one basis.
  • Provides consulting services pertaining to equipment and facility energy use for multi-family, commercial, and industrial customers. Services include site inspections, building and systems diagnostics, and oral and written feedback and recommendations.
  • Provides training, field mentoring for less-experienced staff, and guidance to customers and relevant market actors.
  • Provides public presentations relating to multifamily, commercial, and industrial building and facility energy efficiency to various audiences.
  • Assists customers to develop project specifications, solicit contractor submittals, evaluate proposals, and participate in pre-bid meetings for projects as appropriate.
  • Reviews other Engineering Consultant savings calculations and authorizes incentives following established protocols.
  • Performs on-site inspections which may include measuring dimensions of building components, verification of installed heating, cooling, and/or ventilation systems, diagnostic testing, and collecting and recording data.
  • Analyzes building energy efficiency levels using modeling software or through other accepted tools and provides reports and documents as well as oral and written recommendations to customers.
  • Supports the coordination of activities with other staff, groups, and divisions within VEIC as is necessary to accomplish organizational goals and objectives.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Strong personal commitment to the mission, vision, goals, culture, and values of VEIC.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical, electrical, or related engineering field plus a minimum of five years’ experience analyzing multifamily, commercial, or industrial energy use, identifying opportunities for energy improvements, and assisting customers, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills were acquired.
  • Advanced understanding of buildings, facilities, and/or manufacturing systems, building energy use, building construction, and energy analysis techniques. Experience with large scale commercial/industrial clients preferred.
  • Demonstrated and applied understanding of negotiation skills, financial analysis, and business strategies.
  • Demonstrated success in handling multiple, concurrent projects as it relates to project management, construction management, and building long-term customer relationships.
  • Experienced with mobile PC applications and tablet computer use, building energy modeling tools, spreadsheet, word processing, and database software.
  • Knowledge of relevant codes and standards and demonstrated leadership internally and externally in at least one significant area of technical and/or financial expertise.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and competent written and oral communications skills and ability to apply them within a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to be organized, detail-oriented, accurate, and able to track progress to ensure timely involvement in multiple projects and associated tasks and competing priorities in a dynamic and fast paced environment.
  • Willingly and positively adapts to new situations, processes and innovation; ability to adapt style to meet the needs of individuals and/or the organization.
  • Must be able to work independently and use sound decision making practices while maintaining high level organizational goals.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • This position primarily involves desk-based work with extensive collaboration and communication responsibilities. Physical requirements include:
  • Ability to remain stationary at a workstation for extended periods (typically 6-8 hours per day with regular breaks)
  • Regular use of computer, keyboard, mouse, and telephone/headset requiring fine motor skills and repetitive hand/wrist movements
  • Visual acuity to view digital screens, documents, and presentations for prolonged periods
  • Verbal communication abilities are sufficient for clear articulation during in-person and virtual meetings, presentations, and discussions
  • Auditory capabilities to participate effectively in conversations, conference calls, and virtual collaboration sessions
  • Cognitive focus for simultaneous management of multiple communication streams, projects, and stakeholder relationships
  • Occasional movement between meeting spaces, collaboration areas, and individual workstations
  • Minimal lifting requirements (typically under 15 pounds) for office supplies, equipment, or materials

Additional Requirements for Roles Involving Travel and / or Site Visits:

  • A valid driver’s license and compliance with the Motor Vehicle Safety guidelines outlined in VEIC’s personnel policies.   
  • Ability to travel independently to various locations, which may include driving, flying, or using public transportation 
  • Physical mobility to navigate various building environments including commercial facilities, construction sites, mechanical rooms, and/or residential properties 
  • Capability to climb stairs, stand for extended periods during site visits (1-3 hours), and occasionally access confined spaces or use ladders 
  • Tolerance for varying environmental conditions including temperature fluctuations, construction noise, and outdoor weather during site assessments 
  • Ability to conduct walking tours of commercial and industrial facilities with use of required personal protective equipment (e.g. safety glasses and hearing protection) for common industrial workplace hazards.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry equipment, tools, or materials weighing up to 40 pounds 
  • Manual dexterity to operate testing equipment, measurement devices, or other field tools as required

Travel Requirements:

  • Occasional to Moderate Travel
  • This position involves occasional to moderate travel (up to 40% of work) mostly within Delaware (typically 2+ days per week meeting at customer sites). Travel may include regional site visits, partner meetings, or VEIC gatherings. A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel independently within the service region are required. Overnight stays may occasionally be necessary.

$80,000 - $90,000 a year
