Job Description

JKMuir is seeking an Energy and Sustainability Specialist to join our team! Fast paced and at the leading edge of technology and efficiency, JKMuir offers a team orientated, collaborative, and engaging environment where you are working directly with our clients on projects that make a difference. Hands-on field work gives you the opportunity to see equipment and technology in action and develop real-life solutions that have technical, environmental, and financial impacts.

The preferred candidate will have 3 to 10 years of experience and a strong interest in technical analysis for carbon accounting, energy and greenhouse gas calculations, and integration of sustainability metrics into public infrastructure projects/heavy construction. We love data and details! We are looking for excellent written and oral communication skills and a willingness to be flexible, self-motivated, and comfortable performing independent work.

We are a small but growing team of engineers focused on sustainability and climate resilience for public infrastructure projects, including but not limited to water/wastewater facilities, transportation, and urban design. Make an impact and grow your skills at the same time – develop your professional career path at a boutique firm where you are encouraged to learn, contribute, and be part of the broader community. Our team has a diverse professional background and believes in maintaining a work environment that is supportive, collaborative, and flexible

JKMuir is making sustainable infrastructure a reality by supporting large-scale projects in New York City; along with municipalities and public agencies throughout the northeast - developing the detailed analytics around climate and carbon impacts, energy demand, waste diversion, and sustainable material sourcing. JKMuir is quantifying our impact by measuring energy and emissions reductions; and providing the analytics on what moves the climate needle.

Some team members work in the office every day, while others have a hybrid arrangement or are fully remote. Join our team and work remotely (if desired) and/or with a flexible, part-time schedule.

General responsibilities will include:

  • Support a broad range of projects with sustainability strategy, metrics, and reporting.
  • Modeling of facility energy usage, GHG emissions, life cycle carbon, construction materials and waste diversion through excel and other tools.
  • Develop detailed sustainability and Envision documentation materials for public infrastructure projects, including drinking water and wastewater facilities, transportation projects, and urban infrastructure.
  • Review engineering reports, design drawings, construction specifications and detailed construction cost estimates in order to develop calculations and documentation of energy usage, emissions, carbon, and sustainability sourced materials.
  • Create interactive dashboards.
  • Role may also include the support of energy evaluations, process system design and development of operation and maintenance (O&M) manuals for drinking water and wastewater facilities.
  • Successfully manage and deliver projects within schedule and on budget while meeting quality requirements.
  • Work collaboratively and effectively as a member of a project team to prepare technical analysis and reports for clients, and interface with clients and operations staff to obtain and review system operational information.
  • Work directly with clients to discuss projects/sustainability metric/operations/processes, and develop clear presentations of data and metrics for presentation to public officials, permitting agencies, regulators, and community groups.
  • Assist with preparation of proposal materials occasionally.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • Technical experience in the analysis of GHG, carbon, and energy usage.
  • Knowledge of water/wastewater systems and processes
  • Must be able to meet deadlines and perform tasks efficiently within assigned timeframes
  • Must have excellent MS Office computer skills and technical writing skills
  • Must be able to work independently as well as with a team
  • Must be comfortable engaging with clients
  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written)

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • 3 to 10 years of experience in municipal water/wastewater, sustainability and/or climate resilience with respect to public infrastructure
  • Professional experience preparing NYC (or similar) sustainability deliverables including Climate Risk Assessment and Adaptation Plan, Sustainability Management Plan, Sustainable Material Content Plan, Construction Waste Estimate Report, and Energy Profile Report
  • Familiarity with the Envision certification process
  • Familiarity with embodied carbon and/or greenhouse gas accounting

Benefits:

JKMuir offers benefits for positions working 30 hours per week or more. These benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage along with a 401k plan, STD, LTD, Life and AD&D. We also strongly encourage and support participation in industry organizations, presenting at and attending conferences, as well as training and certifications for career and skill development.
