Overview
Just Zero is seeking a Development Director to plan and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy for our small, spirited team as we work with communities and policy makers to replace toxic, climate-damaging waste systems with modern Zero Waste solutions.
The Development Director will lead organization-wide fundraising efforts for Just Zero by focusing on growing our donor base through digital outreach, identifying new potential donors, and building relationships with potential and current donors. The Development Director will report to Just Zero’s Deputy Director and will also work closely with the Executive Director on major gift cultivation and solicitation.
This leadership position also works collaboratively with the directors of Just Zero’s other departments (Policy and Advocacy, Communications, and Operations) to proactively plan and execute cross-departmental strategies to sustainably grow Just Zero’s revenue. The Development Director plays a key role in ensuring that Just Zero fulfills its mission and accomplishes its financial goals.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Developing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising plan to attract new donors, steward existing donors, engage potential and current donors, increase major gifts and giving levels, and expand corporate and foundation giving.
- Partnering with the Executive Director, Deputy Director, Board of Directors, and Advisory Board to ensure that Just Zero meets annual revenue goals and continues to grow and diversify its revenue streams.
- Working collaboratively with the Communications Director and other staff to shape and execute digital engagement for development campaigns, donor communications, and marketing strategies to attract and retain donors.
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with current and potential donors, foundations, corporate partners, and nonprofit leaders, with a focus on growing and engaging Just Zero’s donor base.
- Managing and analyzing donor and fundraising data; preparing fundraising reports, budgets, and projections; and using fundraising data to identify potential strategic initiatives, evaluate the effectiveness of fundraising strategies, and identify areas for improvement.
- Researching and identifying prospective donors – including individual donors, foundations, and corporate donors – and prepare proposals for new funding streams.
- Planning and executing fundraising events and donor engagement events.
Experience We’re Looking For
- Experience developing and leading nonprofit fundraising strategies in development or a related field.
- Proven success in individual giving campaigns, digital engagement, and donor stewardship.
- Comprehensive understanding of nonprofit fundraising best practices and IRS requirements.
- Proficiency in donor management and CRM systems and fundraising analytics tools.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience taking initiative, using good judgment, and demonstrating a willingness to learn.
- A collaborative professional interested in building a transparent and team-oriented nonprofit organization.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Salary And Benefits
The annual salary for this position is $87,000. Just Zero has an extensive benefits plan that currently includes health, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance, as well as an employer matching retirement plan. All staff have four weeks of paid vacation each year and we offer a generous sick and personal time policy. We support flexible and alternative work schedules.
All Just Zero staff work remotely. About 1-2 times a year, staff members will attend in-person meetings and events (usually in the Northeast). Additional travel up to 2-3 times per quarter will be required for planning and attending donor events, conferences, speaking engagements, and other meetings. For any work-related in-person meeting or event that a staff member attends, all travel and lodging expenses will be covered by the organization.
